This event is an Early Careers networking event to give current students the chance to hear from postgraduates from a range of disciplines. We have several speakers coming along to introduce themselves and their background in STEM with the aim to inspire and give advice to anyone who is thinking about the next step in their career. The topics covered include moving onto postgraduate studies, early careers advice and getting your first job, as well as developing your career. After the speakers have introduced themselves, there will be an open Q&A session to give everyone the chance to network and ask questions to the speakers.
It doesn’t matter which STEM discipline you are from, the aim of this event is to hear from people who have taken that next step after graduating to inform, motivate and inspire others to do the same thing.
The companies being represented at this event include AstraZeneca, Jacobs, Sylvera, and Goldman Sachs, with postgraduate students from UCLA and the University of Amsterdam.
EUWiSTEM is teaming up with Chemunity and Chemistry’s EDI Committee to host a Careers and Experiences Coffee Chat! The careers advisor Deborah Fowlis and the head of the EDI Committee for the School of Chemistry Jean O’Donoghue will be joining us to discuss their career paths that stemmed from sciences, how they found the roles they have today and what those roles look like. We will also have a Q&A so you can ask any of your own questions about careers and experiences. We hope to see you there!
Does any of these phrases remind you of yourself:
“I have to be great at everything”,
“If things are not perfect, I am a failure” ,
“I cannot ask for help because that would show what a fake I am” ,
“I am not qualified enough, other people know more than me” ?
If yes, then it’s very likely that you suffer from Imposter Syndrome.
Worry not! Research has shown that Imposter Syndrome (IS) affects more than 70% of people at some point in their career!
In this workshop you will identify your Imposter Syndrome and its underlying reasons, and you will be equipped with ways to manage it and boost your self-confidence through a variety of activities and tasks, resources, and a Q+A session.
This workshop is designed for and delivered to all STEM university students by Dr Athina Frantzana and Spread the Word.
About Dr Athina Frantzana
With a STEM background and a passion for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), Dr Athina Frantzana works tirelessly to create more inclusive work and study environments in industry and academia, with equal opportunities and respect for diversity. Her PhD thesis forms the first step to understand the women's representation and experiences within the advanced computing community and suggests solutions to tackle the barriers causing the gender gap in STEM. After her graduation, Athina founded Spread the Word (spreadthewordstem.co.uk), which helps STEM companies and organisations create inclusive workplaces through innovative, evidence-based and tailored practices and strategies. She also continues her research on the impact of mentoring. Since last academic year, Athina has been working closely with the Edinburgh University Women in STEM (EUWiSTEM) society, and they have been established a successful mentoring scheme for UG and PG STEM students and a program of various workshops in order to raise awareness on Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) in STEM and help students boost their self-confidence. She also conducted, in collaboration with EUWiSTEM, self-funded research on UoE’s attitude towards EDI for STEM students aiming to change what has ineffectively been done so far. The results of this research and the evaluation of the program can be found in the report published by Spread the Word and EUWiSTEM here: https://spreadthewordstem.co.uk/euwistem-collaboration/
