What do we do?

Established in 2016, Edinburgh University Women in STEM Society is focused on promoting equality in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Our society hopes to inspire and encourage students through meeting and engaging with a wide variety of successful individuals, allowing for networking and opportunities. Through this engagement members will learn new skills, gain new contacts, discover new career opportunities and make friends with like minded people. Our goal is to create a members network who can share tips and advice, as behind every successful woman there is a team of women who support her!

Lauren Byrne,

President

Degree: Bsc Chemistry

Year : 4

Hi everyone, I’m Lauren and I’m really excited to be this year’s president! Having been Chemistry rep last year, I think this society is really valuable to be part of and I’m keen to keep exploring the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion this year. When I’m not attempting to be a chemist, I like to read, frequent Edinburgh coffee shops and go round the charity shops.

Magda Budzynska,

Secretary

Degree: BSc Maths and Business

Year : 3

Hi, I'm Magda and I’m the Secretary for this year. I love cooking, traveling, playing tennis, and doing some yoga in the morning. I've joined WiSTEM society to be able to raise awareness about the lack of female representation in the STEM field and provide opportunities for girls.

Nika Teran,

Treasurer

Degree: MChem Medicinal and Biological Chemistry

Year : 3

Hey! I’m Nika and I’m the Treasurer for Women in STEM in 2021/22. This is my 2nd year on the committee and for a good reason - the society does an amazing job at encouraging the members to become more involved in their STEM passions, championing them to find opportunities and giving them the ability to network with influential people from several fields. Beside my prospects in chemistry and STEM in general, I spend a lot of time doing some kind of physical movement, learning about nutrition’s effects on health and trying out recipes that grow in my head.

Roslyn Daly,

Social Secretary

Degree: MPhys Astrophysics

Year: 5

Hey I’m Roslyn and I study Astrophysics! Women in STEM is all about inclusivity and creating a sense of community, so I am very excited to plan some fun socials to get everyone together!

Hello Everyone! I’m Shanece (like sha-nephew) and I’m the Engineering Representative this year! I’m from the east coast of Canada, and did my undergraduate degree in electrical engineering. When I’m not in the library, I love listening to live music, a good cup of coffee, and exploring new places! I’m really excited to be part of such a passionate group this year and am looking forward to having the opportunity to facilitate events that will empower women in engineering!

Hi my name is Laura and I am the School of Informatics rep for this year. I am an avid ice hockey player and also love learning foreign languages in my free time.

Nikole Varma, Geoscience Representative

Degree: BSc Geology

Year: 4

Hey, it’s Nikole! I’m the current Geosciences Representative for the Women in STEM society and this year I’m really looking forward to getting to know more of the wonderful women who are working and studying in STEM. I aspire to share our intersectional experiences as minorities, and use these realities to hopefully make more progress in diversifying and equalising our fields. I’m excited to support and empower my fellow female-identifying geoscientists, and hope we will soon feel more acknowledged by our school and peers. Other than looking at computers and examining rocks all day, I do love pottery and painting. Unsurprisingly, my favourite activity at the moment is pottery painting, so reach out if you’re down for a trip to Doodles!

Sarah Barrie,

Medicine and Veterinary Medicine Representative

Degree: Infectious Diseases Intercal

Year : 3

Hey! I’m Sarah and I’m Med and Vet Med Rep this year! I’m really excited to hold this brand new role and I’m looking forward to working with the rest of the girls on the committee. I want to encourage girls to pursue STEM subjects and within these career paths learn how to carry on thriving past University level, where often women feel pressure to adjust their career to suit society’s expectations. Two of my favourite things are the podcast How to Fail with Elizabeth Day and Ottolenghi’s Simple cookbook.

Simone Richer,

Mentoring Director

Degree: Medicine

Year : 4

Hello I’m Simone! I am the Mentoring Director for the year. I joined EUWiSTEM because I hope to support, promote and empower young women in STEM and I want young women to feel confident and proud to explore STEM opportunities. I believe mentoring is an incredibly valuable experience. In my role I hope to facilitate strong female partnerships that offer guidance and support to undergraduate students and leadership opportunities for postgraduate students. Through the mentoring scheme I hope to promote female leadership and increase female representation in STEM. Outside of school and EUWiSTEM, I like to stay fit with yoga and swimming, and I enjoy spending time in the kitchen trying new recipes!
